I think the time for Korean pop punk was in the early to mid 2000s. In 2012, it’s difficult to find the style being played by many bands. When I first heard District 13, I knew that Rocket Diary knew the genre very well.

The album sounds very much like the pop punk explosion that came in the late 90s in the United States. The music is full of fast tempos, ample crash cymbal, and crunchy, distorted guitar. Rocket Diary may have been influenced by a lot of different bands, but they created a style that has a signature mark.

Even when the band presents the slower, pop punk ballad like “On My Way,” they still continue to use the core style of the genre. Pop punk is a style that many bands were able to perform well and it’s sad that a lot of the bands have disappeared.

Rocket Diary, along with Sugar Donut, are some of the best pop punk bands in Korea and fans will have to look into the past a bit to find them.
