When I listen to Danpyunsun and the Sailors, I honestly feel like I’m missing something, like I don’t have the full capacity to appreciate everything. The band describes themselves as “Psychedelic-Chamber-Pop.” It’s the best description for the band other than adding a “folk” genre attachment. But the four piece goes far beyond folk music. 뿔 is unique. The music includes so many different elements that while on the surface it might sound somewhat simple, the band creates audio landscapes that no other band comes close to.
Even though Danpyunsun and the Sailors is a four piece, including guitar, bass, violin, and percussion, it sounds so much bigger. Danpyunsun might be the core by providing vocals and guitar, but every other member make a strong addition to every song. Violin by Jang Soo Hyun provides much of the melody and Choi Woo Young‘s bass gels each individual verse together. Most impressive to me is Jang Do Hyeok‘s percussion. Since he doesn’t sit behind a drum set and uses a variety of different percussion instruments and cymbals, the music immediately has a different impression. “모든 곳에” is a great example of this. The music is psychedelic without needing electronic instruments, has a wide sound, and still remains catchy.
A huge strength is that none of the instruments are secondary in the songs. Each one has an important place. Danpyunsun and the Sailors’ “연애” adds Kim Sawol and her vocals fit the song perfectly. It would be interesting to see more artists collaborate with Danpyunsun and the Sailors because it gives the songs more color. 뿔’s ten songs are full of strong tracks. “낮” is a song that highlights Danpyunsun’s vocals and the talent of the band. It sounds like a song for a soundtrack without being limited by what could be happening on screen.
뿔 can be appreciated by anyone who enjoys melodic or folk music. Musicians may appreciate the music even more with the complexity of the songs. I like hearing the uniqueness of Danpyunsun and the Sailors compared to all the other music I listen to. Their albums are one that I feel can be appreciated everywhere, if more people knew who they were.
