I discovered Morrie through bandcamp and found her album interesting. I then searched for Morrie though Facebook and asked her for an interview. After being directed to her label, FilmScore Music, and getting approval; I sent off the questions.

Since Morrie isn’t an artist who many people will be familiar with, I suggest listening to her songs on the FilmScore Music bandcamp page.

Can you introduce yourself?

Hello! I am a singer song writer Morrie. So far I’ve released my first album, don’t listen to this music if you are happy, and my second album, the music died on the air, and I’ve been performing these days!

How would you describe your music?

If you were to put a label on it, I’d say my music is acoustic pop. With an easy and humble sound, I narrate my stories — so it’s like journal for me.

On my first album, it’s filled with pretty and refreshing stories told by a girl with aegyo. On the second album, I’ve detracted some instruments to go for a clean and simple sound. Also, it has more heartbreak stories — like a mature woman.

What are your musical influences?

I don’t have a particular genre or musicians that I follow but I just like to hear music that entertains my ears — I appreciate diverse genre. Also I tend to get more influence, not by music, but by the sound or feeling from objects and people around me. For example, one day I was just listening in to a clock ticking so I ended up writing this song “Simple Beat” on my first album. ^^

That’s why I wrote “You inspired me” on my first album.

When I listen to some music I like on repeat, I hear all the separate layers of instruments and I get inspired or get good ideas to compose music.

You have an album recorded in English, what was the reason behind recording an English-language album?

I think that English sounds the most natural on the melodies and that was the main reason. Also I wanted people around the world to enjoy my music — not just Koreans.

What do you think of distributing your music through bandcamp?

A lot of musicians sometimes can’t easily find out about distribution so they end up listening to their own amazing music in their own room. Or they have to find a big distribution company who takes a big part of the revenue.

So I think that bandcamp is amazing platform for musicians — I’m thankful!

What do you think of the Korean indie music scene?

I think there are so many talented musicians in the scene — some musicians can literally do everything, from writing, composing, mixing, arranging. However the market is so small and sometimes very limiting in terms of genre so it’s hard for some people to get noticed. So that part is sad but I truly believe in ‘A music like gem will always shine through.’

If someone wants to do music in an indie scene, I think it’s important to be able to look far ahead, instead of immediate things. Also, it’d be a plus if the masses can be interested in something that’s not in the major scene and appreciate diverse genre of music. ^^

Do you have any favorite musicians?

I usually listen to everything so many times, I am unaware of musicians names or titles although I love the music. When I get to see all these great musicians on YouTube I get excited! So if someone asks me “who is your role model?”, I’d fail naming a few.

Though recently, I’ve been following Lucy Rose, a singer-songwriter.

Is there a musician that you recommend?

I would like to introduce you guys to Dr Simpson — we got to be good friends through the radio show that I was hosting.
I don’t consider myself as a “hip-hop fan” but Dr Simpson’s music has this charm to it. Very honest music, like himself!
The melodies are great and he’s always to learn so I also learn a lot from him.

Anything to say to readers?

I highly suggest you listen to Morrie’s music. It’s much lighter than most music I usually listen to, but there is a great charm to the music. Hopefully I’ll be able to catch a live show and record a performance.
