It’s a bit easier to discover bands from Seoul than it is from the Southern part of South Korea. It does seem like Busan has a lot of different bands and Pandaz was one of them. I found them through the Busan City Compilation and really enjoyed their sound.

I put it on a list, but forgot to ask Hyun Goo Bang, drummer of Pandaz, if the band would be willing to answer some question. It took a bit to send them questions and it took a little while to receive them back, but here is the interview with band.

pandaz profile

Can you introduce Pandaz?

We have been together since 2005 in Busan, Korea. We normally play on the stage of rock clubs in Busan and sometimes on the festivals as well. January this year we released our first full length album PANDAZ and started traveling around other cities like Seoul, Daegu, or Gwangju.

How did the band name came about?

To be honest nobody in our band seriously considered about selecting the band name. We just wanted an easy cool name. So there’s no serious meaning. Unfortunately ๐Ÿ™‚

Pandaz’ music style is a mix of older hard rock and melodic rock. How did you get into this genre?

Actually we don’t write songs within a specific mindset. There’s no target genre or category.

Our songs are the result of long and tedious jamming. All four members musical tastes are different, so it’s like making a good cocktail. Probably all of us are enjoying older hard rock and melodic rock style.

How long did it take to write and record the self-titled album? How do songs get composed?

We started recording back to 2006! It was a reckless challenging because we had completely no understanding about the recording process at that time. We quickly got tired of recording then, we stopped for several years. But we restarted recording from Autumn 2013 because we realized the need of our first album to move ourselves a step further. For about 4 months, we concentrated only on the recording.

As explained to previous question, we compose songs by jamming. It starts from a simple guitar riff or a bass riff, or sometimes from a rhythmic idea. We play it over and over and adding more ideas..then it slowly transform to a music.

For a couple of songs we improvised some parts during the recording also. For 4th track, we added Hae-Geum (Traditional Korean instrument) playing above bridge of the song during the recording. It was quite interesting to see the Hae-Geum player(Thanks to Kim Un-Jung (Ms.)) making harmony with rock sound. Also for 9th track Jo Jong-Won (Mr.) played the ending guitar solo. He is an amazing guitarist of band Lowfeels(Busan). We are very satisfied with his bluesy playing that was recorded.

As a band in Busan, how is the local music scene? What do you think Busan offers as opposed to Seoul for music?

Even though the Busan scene is not as big as Seoul, Busan bands and fans are not weak. There are many unique bands in Busan keeping their own style for many years regardless of trends differing. We think it makes a little different sound compare to music in Seoul.
We believe Busan scene is steadily growing and will be stronger in near future.

What are Pandaz’ goals for 2014?

Our vocalist’s son has born last April. So we are having short break at the moment but still practicing and collecting ideas for new songs.
We will be back to the stage probably in July. We want to play live as much as possible with album promotion in this year.
