Discovering new musicians is one of the best things about searching online. Saebyeok‘s Rise from the Ashes was on bandcamp and I never heard of her before. From the first listen, I was drawn into the music and enjoyed playing the EP on repeat. It was a little more difficult to find her on social media, but I was finally able to find her and ask if she’d answer some questions.

Hopefully next time I visit Seoul, I’ll be able to see her perform live.

Can you introduce yourself?

My name is Saebyeok and I’m korean singer song writer and bassist:)

How did you start composing music under the name Saebyeok?

I released a synth pop digital single on Sep 2010. In Korean Saebyeok means before sunrise and I thought the feeling of this word fit my music.

How would describe your music?

I suppose i would describe my music as warm and beautiful.

What tools do you use to compose music?

Usually, ableton live 9. I can’t play piano so I make some chord progression to using MIDI. sometimes I use acoustic guitar.

How long did it take to write and record Rise from the Ashes?

About 1 year and 6 months. the first song “without u” was composed during Dec of 2012. and the last song “Shine” was composed during March of 2014. until that time, after i composed these songs I mixed and recorded them multiple times.

What kind of message are you trying to say with your music?

My lyrics are based on my life and experiences. I just want to convey and share my feeling with other people through my music.

Do you have a favorite song on the EP?

“Sea of june.” when I listen to it I feel like im at the beach.

Is there a difference when playing the songs live as opposed to the official recording?

There has been no difference until recently, on June 28th I’ll play electric bass while singing (WATMM vol.16 at Mudaeruk)

What are your influences?

Original music, relationships with other people and travel. sometimes books and art exhibitions. everything in my life.

Did you have any expectations with Rise from the Ashes?

Nah. this is my first EP where I did everything. I’m still green at this work and maybe next time I’ll getting have higher expectations.

Are there any Korean electronic musicians that you recommend?

Saram12saram, MOT, JUUNO and Byul.org. Byul.org and MOT are the team which helped me decide to start electronic music. JUUNO is the person that first showed me how to make electronic music. and his single ‘”Shift” is great, check it out.
