For some reason, Korean electronic musicians are using bandcamp to release their music more than any other genre. That’s honestly not a problem for me because I’ve become a fan of all the different artists and their different styles. KIRARA contacted me after I mentioned Saebyeok’s interview about a remix she had done. We had a lengthy Twitter DM conversation and I asked her if she would introduce herself and her music.

Hi! My Name is KIRARA and I am korean electronic musician.

Where did the name Kirara come from?
Originally, it is named after a certain japanese person. When I found the name kirara, I tried to search the name on google, and I found a picture of a cute animated character that looked like a yellow cat. That was a character from the japanese animation InuYasha. I knew it later. and i finally started to love that character, and decided to use that name.
원래는 어떤 일본 사람에게서 그 이름을 따왔었는데, 나중에 그 이름을 구글 이미지 검색에 쳐봤을때 노란 고양이같은 캐릭터가 계속 뜨더라구요. 알고보니 일본 애니메이션 ‘이누야샤’에 나오는 캐릭터였다는 사실을 뒤늦게 알게되었고, 결국 그 캐릭터를 좋아하게 되면서 그 이름을 사용하게 되었습니다.
What’s the difference between STQ Project and Kirara?
STQ Project is an old name of Kirara. I used the name in 2008 ~ 2012.
I changed the name just because the former name was too long.
STQ Project는 그냥 키라라의 옛날 이름이라고 생각하시면 될것 같아요. 2008년부터 2012년까지 이 이름을 사용했었군요.
이름이 너무 길어서 그냥 바꿨어요.
How would you describe the type of music you compose?
I always describe my music as “pretty and strong.” I use this sentence as a catchphrase of KIRARA. That is what I actually make, I think.
and I often heard that other people describe my music as “cute” or “fun.” I agree.
전 항상 제 음악을 ‘이쁘고 강합니다’라고 소개합니다. 이 문장을 항상 키라라의 캐치프레이즈로 달고 다니곤 하는데, 이 말이 가장 맞는 말인 것 같아요.
들어주시는 분들은 ‘귀엽다’ 또는 ‘재밌다’라는 대답을 많이 해주시는데 동의해요.
Are there specific influences you have that help you compose?
Maybe there are no influences. I usually compose my songs with an unconscious mind. But sometimes, I guess I receive influences from the weather or season. Every year of my entire work, my summer works and winter works had been quite different from each other. Even I don’t know why.
영감이랄것이 어쩌면 거의 없을거에요. 주로 무의식으로 작업을 하곤 합니다. 그런데 가끔씩은 날씨나 기후에서 영향을 많이 받는것 같기도 하네요. 작업을 해온 매 해 항상 저의 여름작업과 겨울작업이 많이 상반되게 달랐거든요. 저도 제가 왜그런지 모르겠어요
What tools do you use when making music?
I compose my music with my lovely ♡Macbook Pro♡ and my durable Magic Mouse. And I use Ableton Live 8.
On stage, I mainly use AKAI APC40 to perform my music.
저의 맥북과 튼튼한 매직마우스로 열심히 곡을 만듭니다. 그리고 에이블톤 라이브 8을 사용하고 있어요.
공연할때는 AKAI APC40을 주로 사용합니다.
Do you have a favorite song that you’ve composed?
“Snow” from ep cts1. No one can make such a thing except me, i think. This song may be able to represent all of KIRARA’s identity.
cts1 앨범에 실려있는 “Snow”입니다. 세상에 저 말고 어느 누구도 이런 느낌을 낼 수는 없는것 같아요. 이 곡이 키라라의 정체성을 대표할수 있는 곡이라고까지 생각하네요.
Any plans for more music soon?
Of course. I will make my work until I die.
After the ep cts2, i wont release any albums for a while. I want to do my ‘winter work’ and then maybe i can release another album in the winter or spring. i guess.
and I am going to have a live performance in November. WATMM, mudaeruk. Seoul.
물론이지요. 저는 제가 죽을때까지 뭘 만들고 있을것 같아요.
cts2 앨범 이후로 당분간 음반 발매 계획은 없지만, 아마 겨울이 돌아와서 ‘겨울작업’을 다시 하게 된다면 그제야 다시 앨범을 낼 수 있지 않을까요
그리고 11월에 서울의 무대륙에서 watmm 공연을 앞두고 있어요.
Are there any other Korean electronic artists that you would recommend?
JUUNO, HAIHM, YUKARI, SIMA KIM.
I think JUUNO and HAIHM are ‘musicians of musicians’ of the korean electronic underground scene. and I also respect both musicians.
and YUKARI, SIMA KIM. they are geniuses. i think. i love their soundscapes. you rock.
JUNNO, 하임, 유카리, 시마킴이요.
특히 JUUNO와 하임씨 두분은 많은 다른 전자음악가들에게도 사랑받는 큰 별이라고 생각하고, 저도 많이 존경하고 있답니다.
그리고 유카리와 시마킴은 제 생각엔 아무래도 천재인 것 같아요. 그 두분의 음악세계를 사랑합니다. 짱먹으세요
Do you have any goals with your music?
I want to enjoy my work after all. Just as I’ve been doing so far. That is my goal.
And I wish someday I can contribute for the minority rights movement of korea.
지금까지 해왔던것처럼 제 작업을 영원히 ‘즐기는’ 것이 저의 목표입니다.
그리고 언젠가 한국의 인권운동에 기여할수 있는 영향력있는 사람이 되고도 싶네요.
