When I was proposed with an editorial, the theme was, of course, about music.
So this editorial should have been about a musician’s unique perspective, amusing experiences, personal opinions.
However, in front of the unbelievably horrendous accident that happened on April 16th, 2014, I was reduced into an useless person.
It’s a very horrific and cruel April.
Sailing with 476 passengers and a lot of cargo, weighing 6835 tons, the “Sewol” ferry sunk in the middle of the sea. Along with 325 very excited students, on a field trip, sank with that ferry.
How can this possibly happen?
Just a couple months ago, we lost new freshmen of a university at Mauna resort’s building due to the collapse of its roof. Four years ago, we lost 46 patriotic soldiers when Cheon An boat sank.
Despite losing countless citizens at the fire at a Daegu subway station, the collapse of Sung Soo bridge, and Sam Poong Department store, I just prayed and prayed for these tragedies to never happen again.
The small pier at Jindo, which is usually full of fishing boats, is now filled with lament and weeping.
It is, of course, almost impossible to understand what surviving families are going through, but everyone is filled with sorrow and panic — it’s indeed a collective trauma.
The ferry company that’s being criticized and has fingers pointed at them for embezzlement, malpractice, property disclosure, lobbying, tax evasion, and its flintiness with politics.
The old ferry that was bought and loosely modified found its new name as Sewol.
In that boat, blinded by money,
Complacently neglectfully overloaded,
Filled with hazardously loaded containers and cars.
No one followed manuals while sailing and when the accident happened.
Just concern for themselves, the crew that abandoned passengers.
We get more and more speechless when we hear more words on the cause of the accident.
In reality, the sunken Sewol is a reflection of the Republic of Korea.
The Sewol tragedy is a small version of Korean society,
which regrettably shames Korean society’s contradictions and irrationality.
The government’s wishy washy behavior betrayed urgent matters and the families’ desperation.
The government couldn’t even begin to orchestrate properly in critical moments.
They waited, they flustered, they lied.
Our children were dying in front of eyes and we could only watch.
As the ferry began to sink, the captain calmly announced to passengers to stay where they are.
Just so he could escape safe and sound.
The passengers were sinking along the ferry,
This mirrors the behaviors of these so-called “leaders of society,” turning their backs so they can survive.
Maybe Korea is sinking and we were told to stay where we are, believing that they are right.
The real question that we have to ask at the moment is,
Can we really believe what is said from this society’s bridge?
Do we dare to leave our destinies and lives in those hands?
It’s been already 10 days since the sinking of Sewol.
The government is so consumed by their good old bureaucracy that they cannot hear the families’ complaints and anger.
They are distant to the search. Rather, they’re using police force against families trying to communicate by visiting the Blue House.
This is nonsense and deserving of fury from citizens.
Efficiency, efficiency.
They like to emphasize it and that archaic and dull efficiency has led 120 people to be trapped under the cold ocean.
How did the media contribute?
This tragedy violently validated incompetency of the media.
The media was heavily influenced by the government and successfully played the role of mistress of the government.
The lazy media was no longer factual and there was no such thing as true journalism.
It was almost like competition of who puts out the most appealing breaking news — we couldn’t find any ethics or truth.
Just instigation and false reports.
We are all sorry, but the President is not.
The good-for-nothing Blue House coldly claims that they are not a disaster relief organization.
The journalism conceals the government’s unjust behavior only to grow bigger frustration.
Tragedy happened and there was no one to lead and take responsibility.
In 2014, there is no such thing as government and journalism in Korea.
처음 이 사설에 대해 제안을 받아을 때의 주된 테마는
당연히 음악에 관한것 들이었다.
따라서 이 사설은 한 뮤지션의 입장에서 바라보는
독특한 시선들, 재미있는 경험들, 개인적인 견해들이
되어야 마땅한 것이었다.
그러나 2014년 4월 16일에 벌어진 믿을 수 없는 끔찍한
사건앞에서 나는 단지 ‘아무것도 아닌 나’일 수 밖에
없었다.
너무도 끔찍하고 잔인한 4월이다.
승객 476명과 수많은 화물을 실은 6835t급 여객선
‘세월호’의 바다 한가운데서의 침몰. 더구나 들뜬
마음으로 수학여행을 가던 무려 325명의 고등학생들이
그 배와 함께 침몰했다.
어떻게 세상에 이런 일들이 또 일어날 수 있단 말인가.
불과 2개월전 우리는 경주 마우나리조트 체육관 건물
붕괴로 갓 대학에 입학한 꽃다운 새내기들을 수없이
잃었고, 4년전 천안함의 침몰로 우리를 지켜주던
46명의 형제들을 잃었다.
대구 지하철에 불이 나고, 성수대교가 붕괴되고,
삼풍백화점이 무너져 수백명을 잃었을때도 이런
비극이 다시 벌어지지 않기만을 간절히 바랬다.
만선을 기원하며 고기잡이 가신 아버지를 기다릴
진도의 작은 항구는 지금 오열과 통곡의 장소가
되었다.
물론 사망자와 실종자 가족들의 마음을 이루 헤아릴
수는 없겠지만, 이를 지켜보는 모두가 슬픔과 비탄에
잠겨 정신적 충격과 공황상태를 호소하고 있다.
그야말로 ‘집단 트라우마’인 것이다.
횡령, 배임, 재산은닉, 재산 국외 유출, 탈세, 로비
등등…정경유착 비리의 온상으로 지목되고 있는
해운회사
그 해운회사에서 들여온 오래된 배이자 임의로
개조까지 된 세월호.
그 배안에는 눈에 보이는 돈에만 연연하여
무사안일주의로 방치된 과적, 불량적재 컨테이너와
차량들이 가득.
운항시, 그리고 사고직후에도 매뉴얼대로 따르지 않고
자신들만을 챙길 뿐…철저히 승객들을 버린 선원들.
사고원인을 알기 위해 하나씩만 짚어봐도 말이 안되는
이야기들 뿐이지만, 사실 침몰한 세월호는 작은
대한민국일 뿐이다.
세월호 참사는 한국 사회의 축소판이며, 세월호
참사는 불행히도 한국 사회의 온갖 모순과 부조리를
고스란히 보여주고 있다.
상황의 긴박함, 가족들의 절박함과는 달리 정부는
갈피를 못잡고 왔다갔다의 행보를 했다. 생사를 가를
결정적인 상황초기에 정부는 지휘와 책임의 중심
조차도 없었다. 서로 미루고 허둥대며 계속
거짓정보를 토해내 결국 눈앞에서 우리 아이들이
죽어가는 실황을 지켜보게끔 만들었다.
초기에 배가 침몰하기 시작하자 승객들에게 침착하게
자리를 지키라고 안내방송을 한 뒤 선장 및 선원들은
가장 안전하게 대피했다. 그 시간에 승객 대부분은
바다밑으로 가라앉고 있었다. 이러한 행적은 한국
사회에서 ‘사회지도층’이라 불리는 기득권 지배자들이
위기에 처했을 때 생존하는 방식을 그대로 닮았다.
어쩌면 대한민국 전체가 침몰하고 있으며, 우리는
‘침착하게 자리를 지켜라’라는 윗사람들의 말만 믿고
살아가는 존재들이 아닐까.
결국 지금 우리가 물어야 할 것은 과연 우리가 살고
있는 이 사회의 조타실을 맡고 있는 사람들에게
우리의 삶과 운명을 이대로 맡겨도 되는가 하는
것이다.
벌써 사고 10일째. 실종자 가족들의 분노와 항의에도
불구하고 정부는 뼛속깊은 관료적 사고에만 기댄 채
수색작업에 안일한 태도를 보이고 있으며, 오히려
청와대로 항의방문 하겠다는 가족들에게 경찰병력을
투입해 강제로 제지하는 등 어이없는 태도들로
국민들의 분노를 사고 있다. 매번 운운하는 효율성
효율성, 그 멍청하고 고지식한 효율성으로 아직도
120여명이 저 차가운 바다밑에 있는 것이다.
또한 미디어(언론)는 어땠는가. 이번 사태로 한국
언론의 무능함도 그대로 드러났다. 정부의 통제를
받으며 정치의 시녀 역할를 충실히 하는 나태함을
보였으며, 사태를 정확하게 보도하는 언론 정신은
거의 사라졌다. 속보경쟁과 시청률에 내몰린
언론사들에는 진실도 윤리도 없었다. 오직 선동과
오보만이 있을 뿐이었다.
시민들은 미안해 하는데 대통령은 미안해 하지
않는다.
무능한 정부는 청와대가 재난 컨트롤타워가 아니라고
한다.
그러한 정부의 과오를 커버해주는 언론의 행태에
실종자 가족들은 극도의 반감을 보이고 있다.
일은 터졌는데 책임을 물을 곳은 결국 아무곳도 없다.
2014년 대한민국에는 정부도 없고 언론도 없다.
