Kitty Moon : Koreander Smash

I saw Koreander Smash mentioned on Instagram so I found the album on Spotify. Kitty Moon‘s EP arrives three years after a debut single. The first song “Angelic Train” sounds like a connection to that first single, “Never Landing.” The four songs on this EP showcase an artist who’s still exploring their sound.

“Angelic Train” is a great introduction. The mellow opening that’s welcoming you into a soundscape that’s building foundations on each verse. At a minute in, the song opens into a synth and rock hybrid. Kitty Moon’s vocals are wide, moving around registers easily. The song does a great job getting you to focus on her performance.

Koreander Smash’s second track, “Regret of The Time 2025,” gave me Lowdown 30 vibes on the first listen. But I think the song is more of a spoken word track rather than song. Like it’s more performance art supported with instrumentals. This could be because there’s a constant build up on the song that never really hits the crescendo. The outro is supposed to push the song, but it kind of dies out.

And considering the first two songs, “8CITY8” is something slightly new. The overlaid synth mixing with guitars and drums give it a technical and electronic tone. Kitty Moon’s vocals comes across clear like on “Angelic Train.” I don’t know if she favors this blues-esque tone on the chorus, but I feel it could go further. It sounds like she’s cautious to really push limits. Or this could be a mixing issue.

Out of the four songs, “Glass Curtain” is the most cohesive. A melancholy, almost shoegaze, rock track, it gives space for everything to exist in a natural state. Kitty Moon flows over the verses as a companion instead of a layer. The instrumentals provide the structure to let her dwell longer.

Kitty Moon’s first EP is four distinct songs that all have an underlying connected tissue. I think “Glass Curtain” is the most impactful of these songs, but I also think that a longer release would let her create a lasting album narrative.

These four songs are a bit disjointed and act as a general introduction. People can choose their favorite song, but you don’t know if that’s what you’ll get on the next release. I’m curious where she’ll go next.
