Dear DeMON : Where's ur mom

I think Dear DeMON was suggested by Instagram. And when I listened to the reel, it was weird. And then I found their music on Spotify. Where’s ur mom is an interesting album. It’s also their previous album Dear Error, with two new songs.

Dear DeMON is centered in rock music. But that doesn’t accurately describe the band. Another slightly confusing fact is that the liner notes show five members, but the majority of online videos show two members with another person in a paper bag on stage with them. So, identification aside, it’s difficult to capture exactly who is officially Dear DeMON and who might have been session members.

With the music, the style depends on the track. “a lot to do” leans towards alternative rock with a bit of British rock. “rocker boii” is indie rock with midwest emo and punk rock emotional weight. These two songs don’t do much to prepare you for the rest of Where’s ur mom.

“plastic day” is another alternative rock and British rock mix. The thing with this is that the song’s mixing is also used to manipulate the presentation. Overall, the song is very clean, even though the guitars have distortion, the vocals are on top and have essentially no filters. It’s a weird audio sandwich.

“pepperoni shitt” is a moody, eclectic song. It’s mixing a lot of ideas and it’s hard to give it a simple explanation. Basically it’s on a journey and you’re following along. “BFF” is an acoustic guitar-led track and presents itself more like a demo than fully realized song.

“in a river” is one of two singles and I can see why it was chosen. The minimal guitars with a focus on almost spoken word vocals. Song on Where’s ur mom are all free-formed. I feel like each track started from one point of inspiration and then expanded into a song without concern for how it connected with other tracks. It’s an open listen but also hard to connect with any particular emotion.

“where’s ur mom” is like “BFF.” A new song that also sounds like a demo with its minimalist production. The last song, “can’t breathe” is an instrumental. And this might actually be Dear DeMON’s best presentation of who/what they are as a band. It moves through many ideas and captures the overall energy of this album.

Dear DeMON has a unique sound and presentation. It’s difficult to understand where the band started and where it wants to go. Instead, Where’s ur mom is a snapshot of the time.
