sooth : crack

I’ve listened to multiple singles by sooth. And each one built on her composition skills. Now after four singles, sooth has a first EP. crack is a conversation with the past, present, and future.

“crack” is a mellow and slow start. Focused on presenting a plain singer-songwriter, sooth introduces the EP with an acoustic guitar and vocals. It’s a tried-and-true singer-songwriter track that sounds like a demo that could be expanded into a folk or indie rock song.

The surprise was “floating clouds.” It goes back to 2025’s “mark.” sooth moves from a passive presentation to indie rock with lighter melodic vocals. The song pulls in a little bit of shoegaze ideas while maintaining a indie rock sound that reminds me of swiimers. The guitar distortion is muted under the clearer vocals, focusing the listening experience until the bridge.

“floating clouds” is the EP’s single, but I prefer “illness.” There’s more weight here. sooth is great in higher melodies, but the pull on this song has more attitude. The one thing that could have improved the song is a slightly dirtier mix. The EP is so clean that some of the energy is stripped down. I bet in a live show, this song will stand out.

“O” might be sooth’s intersection with post rock. The instrumentals’ repetitiveness are countered with sooth’s vocals that come in and out. Like “illness,” this song needs more crunch to counter the high quality melodies in sooth’s vocals. It needs that moment to lose control.

The final track, “Ak!” goes back to early singles. It’s a midpoint between the singer-songwriter style of “crack” and the post rock-light ideas of “illness” and “O.” It creates a circular journey for the listener.

sooth showcases a couple of dominant styles on crack. I can see either path working well. Personally, hearing sooth go full post rock would be very interesting, but her other style works well too. Either way, this first EP is a strong set of tracks that prove how good sooth is at creating music.
